Today we woke up quite late, but then again we didn't get to sleep until quite late last night. After a light breakfast and a quick swim in the bay, we headed out--we had more schlepping to do! The destination was Kalomeria, a town on the north-east coast of the island. The sea was calm and the sail went by fast, but then again there were three of us to share the load, so one figures!
Once in Ikaria, we had to change our original mooring place, because the coast guard did not approve of our original parking spot; we were also asked to pay a fee--for the first time since Galaxidi! The weather was very, very hot and so the first thing I did once we moored in our final resting place was a swim to cool off. As luck would have it, there was a sewage pipe right in the middle of the harbor. so we had to go for a long walk before we found water that was not polluted and smelly.
As we walked by the main pier (where all the big ferries go), we noticed a monument to Ikarus who, duh, gave name to the island. According to the legend, he fell to the sea near the island! Sadly, I didn't snap a picture of it...
We then went for a walk around the town, which was quite nice by the harbor, but got more and more derelict as we climbed up the hill further inland. The evening was a calm one--I spent most of it writing postcards and reading a book. I also went online for a bit at a cafe in the port, where I had the privilege of being around a very annoying American baby-sitter, who was as obnoxious as it gets around the kids. I haven't met a louder and a more annoying person in quite some time. Luckily we're off to another island tomorrow!
